Round Up | 1968 – 1977

Round Up was a Frank Hrubetz ride Hersheypark installed in 1968 and operated through the end of the 1977 season.

When Hersheypark published their press release announcing the 1968 operating season, the announcement mentioned a few changes to the park that were being made. One change included that construction would commence on building footers for a new Round Up ride.

Round Up was a circular ride on a platform which tilted on an angle and spun around. Rides stood on the edge of the cage on the platform as they spun around. This kind of ride should not be confused with a Rotor, which is generally the same kind of ride, but smaller, and covered.

Hersheypark’s Round Up debuted sometime after the park opened for the 1968 season, which was on April 21. Per a press release from Hersheypark, work on the footers for Round Up only began shortly before the season opened. It was most likely operational by Memorial Day weekend.

Round Up was constructed next to the Aero-Jet ride better known as Starship America. The location of Round Up would be approximately where Dizzy Drums is located.

In 1975, rides were shuffled around that region to accommodate the addition of a new theater in the park – Dry Gulch Theater, later known as Music Box Theater. Round Up was moved directly next to the Gold Nugget Shooting Gallery. Round Up operated for three seasons in this location until 1977, the ride’s final season.

In 1978, Hersheypark renovated the area of the park where Round Up was located. Round Up was replaced by a new ride, Trabant (later known as Rodeo).
